Hair Care Tips for Alopecia

Alopecia areata is said to be an autoimmune disease that causes hair loss and can be due to stress and illnesses. Chemical or other physical damage to your scalp can cause or make alopecia worse. It looks like a bald patch in the middle or edges of your head or like a visible scalp through your hair. 

Hair are a few tips for caring for a scalp with alopecia and also encourage hair re-growth:

  1. Consult a dermatologist for a hair strand test to determine the cause. Also ask your family doctor to test for iron deficiency that can cause flakey hair and scalp and lead to prolonged hair fall and prevention of hair repair and growth.
  2. Wash your hair and scalp at least twice per week. Don't stop washing your hair because dirt, fungus, dandruff can cause your scalp to become irritated, preventing hair re-growth.
  3. Supplement with Vitamin D. Lack of sunlight can cause Vitamin D deficiency, contributing to hair loss conditions like alopecia. If you are a Black woman or any woman living in a Northern Hemisphere country which is dark for at least six months of the year ask your doctor to check your Vitamin D levels.
  4. Avoid stress, chemicals, or injury to scalp that can cause alopecia to come back. Care for your scalp with haircare products that prevent dandruff, drying of the scalp, itchy scalp that can lead to cuts or broken skin. Use haircare products with Aloe Vera Juice, Green Tea, Allantoin, and Cedarwood Essential Oil.
  5. Avoid food amd drinks that can cause inflammation of the body, skin, and scalp. These include high sugar foods and processed carbohydrates.
